| AN INTERACTIVE ONLINE periodic table – where each element is linked to a YouTube video explaining and experimenting with the element – has become an overnight success. The table’s 118 elements are each brought to life with snappy demonstrations from Martyn Poliakoff, professor at Nottingham University’s Clean Technology Group at the Department of Chemistry. The collections of videos has already gained 150,000 views, and the website has been viewed 80,000 times. “I’m completely overwhelmed,” Poliakoff tells tce. “The response has been fantastic. One person said ‘I love these videos, yet I always hated science as a child, keep them coming.’ That’s the biggest satisfaction for me.” Many of the clips feature lively experiments that are rarely carried out in UK schools due to health and safety restrictions. The most watched so far is the sodium video, which shows the element reacting violently when placed in a tub of water. The series has already received tremendous praise, crucially from the site’s younger target audience as well as professionals and fellow professors. Nobel prize winner Roald Hoffmann told Poliakoff that “I not only liked it, but loved it, and the episodes are like the best reality show I saw. Real sexy, and not just the hair.” The idea came from a conversation between Poliakoff and videojournalist Brady Haran, who was working on Nottingham’s video blog, Test Tube. “He came up with the idea of the periodic table,” says Poliakoff, “and I found some money partly through the DICE project.” All the ‘element’ videos have been recorded and most have gone up on the site, though Polikaoff expects the full set to be on in the next few days. Poliakoff also wants to constantly update the service for its growing list of subscribers. And of all the element videos, what’s Poliakoff’s favourite? “Hassium,” he says. “It’s great, you should really check it out!” |
