JUNIPERS GET NO RESPECT

Like Rodney Dangerfield, Junipers get no respect. They ought to get some respect. I read an article written by a self-described environmentalist, who wrote that Junipers should all be cut down in the deserts because the suck up precious water. I disagree.
The Juniper servers very useful purposes:

As wind brakes which slows down the wind and reduces wind-driven soil erosion.
Has a root mass which prevents erosion from wind and rain.
Harbors wildlife.
Look good in an otherwise sere desert.
Is part of Mother Nature, and we don't fool with Mother Nature.

There is a way to selectively and sustainably harvest some of the Juniper. It is the ancient practice of “decoupage”. The basic premise is that if the major part of a tree is removed and one major, healthy limb coming from near the base of the tree is left, it will grow into a new truck. You see this practice in cut Christmas tree farms.
This practice preserves the root mass which immediately goes to work supplying the remaining limb with water and nutrient. The trunk above the limb to be left, should be cut on a slope then sealed with a bitumen salve to prevent water from exiting the cut and prevent insect infestation. In a few years the limb becomes the new trunk.
The harvested biomass of the Juniper is rich in oil and is “slow roasted” by the pyrolysis process into syngas and biochar. The syngas can be reformulated into a number of gases and heavy oils. The biochar (charcoal) retains about 50% of the available energy in the form of oils and entrained gas.
The biochar has many uses:

Ground and used in activated charcoal as filter and gas absorbers.
Ground and infused with the BioOil from the pyrolysis process, then processed into pellets and briquettes as BioCoalLiteTM.
Ground and infused with suitable micro-organisms and their nutrients, thereby making Agrichar. When Agrichar is worked into about two feet of soil (55 tons per acre), it so enriches the soil that crop yield increases by as much as eight times. Agrichar has been around for over 7000 years and is also known as “Terra Preta du Indio”.
Simply laid on the top of the ground as a mulch around productive trees and shrubs.

When one “digs down” into agronomy science, a reader will learn that the bacteria exude a sort of paste which “glues” the soil particles together so they “clump”. These clumped soil particles then allow for interstitial spaces which in turn allow for infiltration of water and oxygen, thus driving the nutrient exchange between the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and the plant roots. The point of infusing nutrient into the charcoal is to provide a food source for the “soil critters” who, as one biologist said, “Like to sit down to eat”.
So, there you have the best of both worlds: sustainable harvest of Junipers, preservation and enhancement of soils, and abundant crop yields. Now, give the Juniper some respect.

Advocacy:
As President of San Diego County Trails Council, advocated creation of county-wide master trail plan. Drafted initial draft and provided maps for location of proposed trail corridors (600 miles total, of which 330 were adopted).

While County Counsel of Imperial County, I personally headed the effort to get bond issues passed involving a swimming pool, air condition and athletic field improvements for Central Union High School, El Centro. I produced a video show of the use of swimming pools in Calexico, Holtville, Brawley and Patriarchal. I wrote the script and did the narration. This 33 minute clip ran intermittently for two weeks before the election on the local TV station. It showed how much the kids and parents appreciate their pools in the other towns and how important it was to replace the 82 year old public pool in El Centro which was leaking water to under the freeway.
One of my recent courses at MSU was “Social Psychology” from which I gain considerable insight of how groups are formed and work (and some don't work). I have researched and written papers on “bonding and bridging” in our society and a comprehensive list of elements which constitute “social glue”.

I am very self-directed, but will check with the other stakeholders of a project to make sure we are all on board the bus.

Commitment

While I enjoyed my law practice, I have closed that chapter and no longer wish to engage in the practice of law (“been there, done that”). I will, however, put my legal skills to good use (research, due diligence, vetting the case, draftsmanship, looking for traps for the unwary, and assembly of ideas). My particular skill is in relational thinking and having the ability to visualize the end result as part of the planning process. If employed, I would expect to be in the job at least ten years, hopefully longer. I plan to stay the course of creating profitable businesses and a sustainable quality of life for our residents.

Passion:

My passion is to do all in my power and ability to create jobs and profits which greatly exceed the norms for most cities and counties. Well paid employees and profitable businesses promote the public good. As the quality of life improves, so does the resolve of the community members to maintain a safe, salutary and productive community. We have all witnessed what happens when a community has chronic low wages, unemployment and workforces who are under-employed and under paid. The result for these latter communities, is increased crime, homelessness, welfare costs and decreased quality of life for wage earners. Folks who can, escape the neighborhood, leaving buildings vacant and vandalized. In many average communities today, a family of four needs to work 2.5 jobs just to break even. Compare this to life in the 50's and 60's when the income from one parent was sufficient to raise a family in a decent manner. One must never rest on his or her laurels. The economies of the nation, states and communities are moving targets.

Pilot Plant – Algae to Biodiesel
Overview We can use the biodiesel for internal combustion engines (vehicles, boats and, eventually, jet airplanes), external combustion engines (steam engines), heating and cooling, and running generators so we can get off the grid. Biodiesel is a locally produced product which can be used locally, thus avoiding transportation costs and the cost of foreign fossil oil. We can make it ourselves and not be slaves to Big Oil. Because we will be self-sufficient in energy, we can grow our own food, build our own houses, heat our homes and shops, and have enough left over to share with our neighbors.

Our approach is to place in the hands of small farms, small villages, small towns, farmer cooperatives, and other small energy consumers, the systems with which they can produce their own biodiesel derived from locally available kitchen waste oils and/or algae. Objectives for the pilot plant:

Products: The pilot plant will resemble the production units, as follows:

Pond: The pond can be dug and fabricated by most persons possessing farming skills. The cover will be delivered in kit form and the harvest system as an assembled unit. Plumbing and electrical systems require skills common to many farm workers, but should be supervised by licensed contractors.
Extraction unit: The extraction unit will be housed in a cargo container and delivered, ready for use.
Biodiesel production: The product is primarily a small, skid mounted biodiesel unit which can be operated by one person and uses known and well understood transesterification chemistry to produce biodiesel (B99). The B99 would not necessarily be sold but used primarily by the producer for fuel and heating uses and farm or other off-road use.

Marketing:
The production units will be marketing primarily to large farms and to farm cooperatives. Federal subsidies and tax credits are available. Leasing arrangements will be made available to the customer.

Algae evolved another defense mechanism perfect for a plant with many predators; hard cell walls. When a dinosaur ate algae, the animal’s stomach could break down only about 30% of the algal cells. While passing through the gut, the surviving algae cells were in their favorite environment – warm, wet and nutrient rich – so what algae do best; grow and propagate. Well-nourished algal cells would then pass through the dino gut and be pooped into a warm, moist nitrogen rich environment – perfect for more algal growth. 105 A related adaption occurred around algae’s nemesis; nutrient limitation. Many algae growing environments held standing water which quickly becomes nutrient limited because the plant grows so fast. Algae developed a set of strategies for dealing with this common problem: 1. Stop growing and go into dormancy until conditions reset. 2. Stop propagating but continue to store energy – often in the form of lipids. 3. Adapt to the nutrient limitation by absorbing organic nutrients for energy if inorganic nutrients were not available. 4. Produce lipids to create buoyancy which lifts the cell towards the top of the water column where there is light. 5. Grow flagella, a long whip-like tail that moves the alga cell to the needed nutrient. (Flagella movement is a very slow process, on the order of an inch an hour.) Some species can also grow eye buds that can detect the direction of light. Algal adaption strategies create both blessings and curses for green solar farmers. The millions of adaptations benefit biomass producers by providing a wide array of choices for biomass composition. The downside of flexibility is that algae adapt with such velocity and complexity, systems can become unstable quickly. In order to create SAFE production, this wild plant must be tamed, domesticated and cultivated. Laboratory production has been optimized but outdoor cultivated algal production systems, CAPS, have not. When conditions are good, algae grow and develop rapidly. When algae are stressed by nutrient limitations, they slow growth and immediately begin storing fats to ensure their survival. Green solar energy producers take advantage of this adaption and starve algae of Crash! The rise of Abundance 106 nitrogen so it will double the production of lipids that are useful for liquid transportation fuels.
Algae require the same fertilizers as land plants but do not have to rely on the expense and ecological problems associated with mining fossil resources. One of algae's adaptive strategies, bioaccumulation, enables the plant to concentrate certain elements up to 1000 times their ambient levels. Algae grown in wastewater or sea water can accumulate organic and inorganic nutrients from very low dilutions. Algae do not present a problem of salt ions clogging the root systems because algae have no roots. 112 Scientists have found algal species that contain compounds that inhibit the division of cancer cells grown in the laboratory. Additionally, a compound isolated from algae collected from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico has been shown to block cell division and enhance the activity of the cancer drug Taxol.174
Guoyao Wu and team at Texas A&M University found a potential obesity solution in dietary arginine supplementation that shifts nutrient energy to promote skeletal-muscle gain rather than fat.175 Arginine extracted from algae seems to increase lean tissue and muscle growth while diminishing accumulation of fat. Arginine also reduces serum concentrations of branched-chain amino acids and may lead to insulin resistance in obesity. 133 For decades, food and fuels were so cheap that there were no incentives for algaculture. Today, soy protein can be grown at about one tenth the cost of algal protein. Fossil fuels can be extracted and refined for about one fifth the cost of algal oil. Those numbers will flip with scaled commercial algaculture but those technologies have not yet been demonstrated commercially. Green solar is not currently cultivated in the U.S. for a variety of reasons. 135 Lack of government funding for algal research for sustainable food solutions creates a threat that breakthroughs will occur too late and traditional agriculture will fail to provide sufficient food. This highly probable outcome will lead to a global food cascade the starvation of millions. Failing public funding, private firms will lock up the fundamental pathways for algal production with intellectual property protections that prevent wide-spread adoption of green solar. Without public funding and open source technologies, the scientists will discover viable solutions that may end to hunger but these innovations will be locked in corporate intellectual property safes and the people with the most need will have no access. 139 With over 75,000 species from which to select protein composition and nutrient profiles, producers will be able to produce a broad array of different foods. Algae may also be fed to shellfish, finfish, poultry and other animals which expand food diversity exponentially.
Some species are so small they require flocculation. Flocculation is derived from the word floc or flakes of material. When a solution is flocculated, the small solids are formed into clumps of aggregate which are easier to see and to remove with filters or screens. Flocculants are commonly used in water treatment to improve sedimentation and filterability of small particles. Alum, ferric chloride and Chitosin are common flocculants. Flocculation may be too expensive for small-scale algal production. Froth flotation, another Green Independence 157 harvest method, aerates the water into froth and the algae are skimmed off the froth. Interrupting algae’s CO2 supply can cause algae to flocculate on its own, which is called autoflocculation. Some algae secrete various products, especially oil. A production system using secreted oil can harvest the oil by skimming the top of the culture. This method does not require harvesting or processing the algal biomass. Reports on secretion show some advantages but these systems do not produce as much oil or algal coproducts, including protein and micronutrients.
After harvest, algae are scraped off the filter. In some cases, algae are dried in the sun similar to grapes that are dried to make raisins. Other production systems use a centrifuge to demoisturize the algae down to about 5% water. The extraction plan may be driven by convenience or available technology.
The simplest harvest method avoids harvesting algae directly by diverting part of the algal culture to a container with filter-feeders such as bivalves that feed on the algae. These larger trophic level creatures, higher on the food chain, have a natural affinity for algae and relish the work of harvesting. Brine shrimp work well for trophic harvest and are easy to harvest with a net. Brine shrimp can be squeezed to extract oil and the remaining protein biomass eaten or fed to animals. About 30% of current algal production targets fin and shellfish in aquaculture systems such as hatcheries and fish farms.
Prisons. The U.S. currently has twice as prisoners as farmers. Prisons consume extensive resources and create a large waste stream. CAPS could engage trustees in green collar jobs, remediate waste streams, produce algal biomass for tilapia and other fish as well as organic fertilizer for local fields.  Special needs farms. Research on special needs kids and older people with dementia and Alzheimer's provides compelling Crash! The rise of Abundance 178 evidence of vitality, health and cognitive improvement that occurs from animal and plant husbandry. Special needs farms could integrate green solar into their food production as well as their energy and sustainability educational systems.

DESIGN OF THE MICROWAVE CELL BOMB TUNNEL

At some point the cells are as full of water and hexose as possible – the point of diminishing returns. We then heat the cells to 90 degrees or so and pipe them through the microwave tunnel. A short, high burst of energy causes the water in the cell to vaporize, creates explosive pressure, which splits the cell wall open, rather than fracture it in many small particles like the screw press does.
The opened cells and the liquid contents are separated by the vibratory membrane separator. The trick is that by keeping the burst cell wall mostly intact, we have a larger particle and thus the holes in the membrane can be larger and therefor allow for faster processing of the mix of opened sells and liquid.

The microwave tunnel consists of the following:

The in-line pre-heater.
A Pyrex tube 18” long and two inches in diameter.
An insert in the form of a screw inside the tube
Three or six magnetron tubes, set 120 degrees apart along the tube at four inch intervals. Waveguides should be used to focus the microwave energy on the target areas.
Reflective surfaces in or around the tube would cause MW energy not absorbed by the cells to bounce around in the target area, thus enabling additional hits.
An adjustable timer which pulses the microwave tubes, one or two seconds.
A pump to move the slurry through the tube
An adjustable flow control to change the dwell time, as needed.
Sensors for heat and pressure
Data logger and computer software to display and record readings
Microscope to verify cell lysis yield.
Enclosure with shielding.
Electrical power source.
Dosing tube pump for the ethanol (adjustable).

The process is continuous for both the microwave tunnel and the vibratory membrane separator.

SOLAR FURNACE CHP SYSTEM

SUMMARY - SOLAR FURNACE CHP SYSTEM

Over the next 5 billions years before the Sun begins to dim, it will produce unfathomable amounts of

solar energy. A tiny fraction of that solar energy will reach the surface of the Earth. Yet, this tiny

fraction is enough to supply all of the energy needs, properly harnessed and distributed, to sustain our

growing global population in a pollution-free environment. How is this possible? (read on) and is it

probable? (Yes) Consider that the solar energy is responsible for plant growth, wind, waves, hydroelectric power, river power and direct conversion to electricity and for direct heat.

A Solar Furnace CHP System consists of four major elements: A solar energy collector on a Sun

tracker electro-mechanical system, a Thermal Energy Battery, and an application, such as a Combined

Heat and Power unit which can produce rotational horsepower. There are many other applications for

industrial and human use of the latent heat stored in the Thermal Energy Storage Unit. Here's the

problems the Solar Furnace CHP System has solved (on paper):

 Matching load to supply. The storage of a hot liquid in the TEB, greatly in excess of the

anticipated load over time, will allow for uninterrupted use by the applications. Critical backup

should always be provided such as for hospitals, communication centers and other essential

services. The TEB can provide most of that backup, since heat can be generated and parsed into

the TEB from a variety of sources (electric heat, liquid fueled heaters, geothermal heat, heat

from biomass combustion). The supply of heat from the TEB allows for matching to a variable

load.

 “Free” energy. The use of solar radiance to heat the transfer liquid is the lowest cost source of

energy, even considering the amortization of equipment and operational expenses.

 Low cost. The low cost of the Solar Furnace CHP System relative to large central plants,

makes the unit affordable by a much larger customer base.

 Distributed energy. The primary benefit is derived from the ability to size a system for a wide

variety of different applications, loads, and locations. The Solar Furnace CHP System's

electrical generation can operate in stand-alone mode or networked locally or nationally. A

significant savings of energy lost over the transmission lines, due to heat radiation, can be

realized by locating many smaller plants at the point of application and the avoidance of huge,

centralized facilities.

 Heat collection, storage and transfer. The use of a heat transfer liquid allows for two levels

of heat. The collectors will be able, on a sunny day, to heat the liquid up to 600 degrees F. This

liquid will be pumped to the TEB which is a large tank, heavily insulated and containing a heat

exchanger. The tank takes its input from the solar collectors at the maximum temperature (not

to exceed 600 degrees F), which incoming liquid heats the liquid in the TEB.

These units will be marketed to farms, greenhouse operations, dairies, food processing and packaging

plants, industrial plants and institutions which can accommodate the Sun Collectors and tracker

system. The anticipated payback time will be between two and ten years, depending on the

applications employed.

Welcome to AlgalOilDiesel, LLP WikiWeb. Please read and learn all you can about how to turn a 25 micron, single cell plant, into diesel fuel. That's not all. Algal oil can be used for cooking, as a lotion, animal feed and as directly burned fuel for a waste oil heater or boiler. We can use the biodiesel for internal combustion engines (vehicles, boats and, eventually, jet airplanes), external combustion engines (steam engines), heating and cooling, and running generators so we can get off the grid.

The result is that biodiesel is local, affordable, sustainable, and lower cost than petro-diesel. The feedstock can be waste vegetable oil or animal fats or algal oil.

The LRES/SCSHTLTEBSTPDRSCHP-GHG+COWFLOP System

Dear Folks at the Whitehouse and beyond:

We, in the great hinterland of America, sit on our haunches and wonder what really is happening at the Whitehouse and beyond. I think I have finally figured it out, at least, the energy side. What DOE, USDA, -- almost the entire Obama Administration – is trying to do by throwing billions of dollars at the foreign oil problem, is to re-invent the past, make little or no change in the electrical generation capacity infrastructure (production and distribution), in order to live happily ever after. By catering to the oil, coal and biomass industries, the votes in Congress are thus obtained for massive bail-outs of these soon-to-be-obsolete industries. Boy, how that really makes my day – throwing good money after bad, using Las Vegas odds (Jimmy the Greek would be pleased).

There are really only three large sources of non-fossil energy, each with their sets of problems and promises:

Atomic energy has massive waste disposal problems, high infrastructure cost, massive regulatory hurdles and not all that cheap when figuring in the decom of the old production units. Needless to say, atomic power is not the most popular source of mass energy, despite what the French think. Also, these plants have siting problems and do nothing to reduce the need for massive “smart” or “dumb” national electrical grids. Lastly, Atomic Energy is not really “renewable”.

Next, we have wind, wave and geothermal, all of which are great improvements over atomic energy. Again, these solutions require massive investments, siting problems, huge base load facilities and, again, do nothing to reduce the need for massive “smart” or “dumb” national electrical grids.

Then we have solar energy, which is clean, widely distributed around the Earth, does not involve GHG and is, in the long run, the only massive source of energy for the next five billion years before the Sun starts dimming. I call solar energy “Locavore Energy” because it is locally produced and consumed. Take PV on the home roof – the electrical energy runs a very short distance to the converter in the basement or garage or old closet. We are really talking “Locavore Energy” with PV, notwithstanding the approximate $10,000 per kW/hr capital cost. Then there is “concentrated solar power” (CSP), which so far is confined to huge plants, in the deserts, which suck up what little water there is and then send the electrical energy over miles of transmission lines, which waste about 50% of the energy getting from A to B. Also, they have to be careful not to run over the endangered Desert Tortoise.

I would like to suggest a simple, (well, not all that simple) Locavore Energy Solution (LES): THE SOLAR FURNACE CHP SYSTEM. Not to compliment myself, I predict that this solution will be adopted around the Earth where the Sun shines most of the time during the day. Simply put, the system consists of Solar Collectors (SCS), Heat Transfer Liquid (HTL), and a Thermal Energy Battery (TEB). The combination stores HTL in the TEB produced from the SCS. One might call it the SCSHTLTEB system. The SCS is a set of eight parabolic reflectors inside eight cases or troughs which are gelcasts of air-entrained ceramic, about four inches thick. Each case or trough has a “lid” of two panes of thermal glass through which the Sun's radiant heat strikes the parabolic reflector, bounces and penetrates the two inch stainless steel tube (Receiver) filled with HTL. Each trough is a foot wide, a foot deep and three feet long. You follow me so far?

The SCS are nested in a frame which is mounted on a SunTracker Platform (STP). Now we have the SCSHTLTEBSTP system. The SunTracker tracks the Sun and in bad weather, turns the edge of the SCS array into the storm wind. The TEB is a tank holding, say 5000 gallons of HTL, at about 450 – 500 degrees F. This mass and heat is enough to carry most full loads until the Sun shines again. Now for the kicker: the Applications.

There are many, off-the-self- applications which can transform the heat into other forms of energy: electricity, hot and cold water, refrigeration, steam, and rotational horsepower, commonly referred to as Combined Heat and Power (CHP). We now have the SCSHTLTEBSTPCHP System. If you count the fact that the system does not produce GHG (-GHG for “negative GHG), then we have the SCSHTLTEBSTPCHP-GHG, which ought to make most Washington bureaucrats happy with the name alone, and worthy of funding.

Which brings me to the main topic – funding. The Federal bureaucrats in charge at the operational level have marching orders: spend huge amounts of money, fast, in as many Congressional Districts as possible, on old, obsolete technology (i.e. “Clean Coal” -- no such thing), Atomic Energy, high mileage internal combustion engines, and wind machines isolated from the grid (Pickens Plan). Such goals are not only silly, but stupid, not thought-out and will ensure the de-election of President Obama in 2012. If there are any Democrats listening, your chances of maintain your current majority in Congress is doomed in 2012 when the Republacrats or the Demacans regain their power seats in Congress. I can hear their campaign song: “All I want for Christmas is our Thirteen Trillion Back”.

So, what to do? First of all, put out an FOA which has no requirements other than name, rank and serial number with no matching requirements. Do not condition it along the lines of the DOE's Unsolicited Proposal schema which can instantly kill any application which is “similar” to any FOA, past, present or future. So many FOA's have been issued so that there is little or no ground left upon which an innovative application can stand and avoid the “similar FOA” appkiller. Again, the bureaucrats have created a very convenient shield around their job performance – just say no, and they don't have to do any real work.

Surprise! You might have guessed that I, James E. Miller, a humble recovering attorney and ag engineer, would have thought through the Locavore Energy Solution (LES) mentioned above. We now have the LES/SCSHTLTEBSTPCHP-GHG solution. Oh, I almost forgot, we are also working on getting funding for the Drum Roll Steamer CHP System™ (Richard Hundley, inventor) or DRSCHP. This system uses any cellulose to produce syngas, steam, rotational horsepower and biochar. The latter can be infused with BioOil from the pyrolysis operation to make pellets or briquettes of clean(er) burning BioCoalLite™. Alternatively, the biochar can be infused with nutrient (compost tea or black liquor from dairy cow flop lagoon) (Agrichar), then worked into the soil which during the next crop season, will yield up to eight times the normal yield than if seeds were sown in plain dirt. How? Micro-organisms like to sit down to eat, and “Feed the soil – the stomach of the plant”.

So, there you have it – the long term, best solution to our energy and food needs using the Locavore Renewable Energy System (LRES), the solution to the proper use of cow flop, and the solution to our coming Peak Food Crisis. Finally, we have LRES/SCSHTLTEBSTPDRSCHP-GHG+COWFLOP. Recycled water (RW) containing compost leachate can be a potent source of foul odor on mushroom composting sites. Samples of RW were repeatedly collected from storage tanks and pits of 14 mushroom composting sites in England and Ireland. Relationships between the effects of submerged aeration of the RW, the chemical and microbial characteristics of the RW, and the odors emitted were investigated. Recycled water samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), redox potential, and dissolved oxygen concentration after 7 to 14 d cold storage. Freeze-dried material from the RW samples was chemically profiled by pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the content of odor precursor compounds was determined by the ninhydrin colorimetric method.

The headspace air of containerized RW samples was analyzed by thermal desorption GC-MS and with gas detection tubes and assessed for odor intensity (OI) and concentration by panelists and serial dilution olfactometry. The predominant odorants in the headspace and freeze-dried residues of RW samples were volatile sulfur-containing compounds and carboxylic acids. The headspace OI, EC, dry matter content, and redox potential of RW were interrelated. The headspace OI and combined concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) + dimethyl sulfide of RW were correlated (R2 = 0.635; P < 0.001). Prediction of the OI of RW by measuring RW EC and the concentration of headspace sulfides using gas detector tubes enables rapid and low-cost monitoring of RW from mushroom composting sites. Submerged aeration of RW in storage tanks or pits reduced the RW headspace air OI and the combined H2S + dimethyl sulfide concentration by 88%.

LESSON TO BE LEARNED:
Do not containerize the mushroom composting operation. Use open air and introduce 12 to 20% moisture and turn the mass once or twice a week to take the more saturated compost on the bottom and mix it so that the mixture of the compost pile is more uniform.

CLEAN COAL VERSUS DIRTY COAL

June 29, 2009 Burning biomass along with coal is just a bit of greenwashing. Biomass has a very low specific heat per gram/ton as compared to coal. Why buy into a public relations scheme just to benefit the wealthy coal mine owners?

There is no such thing as "clean coal", only "King coal". Coal needs to be cut out of the energy platform or at least be priced to include bioremediation of the open pit mines. When coal goes from $1.70 per million BTU's to $5.00 per million BTU's, then the electric generating plants will switch from fossil coal to "BioCoal", which is charcoal from pyrolysis infused with BioOil, a contemporaneous co-product of the first stage of making syngas.

The Federal government should require open pit coal mines to post huge bonds to ensure that when the coal in the pit is exhausted, that the mountain top be replaced, replanted and maintained for 10 years. More effort and money needs to be added to the mix of coal extraction and burning so as to enable remedation/prevention of toxic wastes entering our biosystems.

As things stand now, our air, streams, rivers and lands are dumping grounds for the coal waste by which operators damage our environmental resources at no cost to them. We need to shut down or reduce open pit coal mining first then work on shaft mining (dangerous) and move to torrified wood and municipal waste, infused with BioOil = "BioCoal". I would guess that all open pit mines would be designated as "Superfund" sites, but for the politics (read bribes to members of Congress by the coal and utility industries). The issues before us are not technical, they are political. We need to ensure that coal pays for all of its costs to prevent harm to our environment. Meanwhile, we need to move toward BioOil infused Biochar which is much cleaner burning. We can use the syngas to make biodiesel and other bio products.

We are comfortable as a culture thinking about energy in the units for which it is traded. Crude oil is over $80/barrel for a moment. Gasoline is running about $2.80 per gallon. Ethanol is down around $1.50 per gallon. So what?

At some point the feedstocks that go into making our energy will need to be standardized. The markets will do this eventually. I thought I would ‘jump-start’ the process by posting representative fuels in terms of $/MMBTU (dollars per million BTU). This is what it looks like for the week ending 10/19/07.

Like the Burning Bio News, I have been tracking prices all year. Some of the materials I am tracking do not have public exchanges. Some of the fuels have seasonal prices and some are voluntarily reported. I am posting the materials that have fairly reliable price series.

There are many, many footnotes. They will get posted here as I get to them. My current goal is to have this fully operational by the end of the 2007. I believe I can keep up with the weekly prices. All of these that are posted are publicly available.

When one begins to ‘meddle’ with non-market economic values like $/MMBTU, important boundaries get crossed. There is a physical and cultural world of difference between grass hay and crude oil. Moisture contents must be removed. The size and weight of the bale has to be assumed (assigned). Even with great care important information does not make the transition.

Two key components of these calculations are the tabled HHV that were used and the densities that may not enter into the price, but add significant value to the interpretation. For instance coal is a great bargain in the $/MMBTU metric. The agricultural materials are right behind coal as a fuel bargain, but coal is very dense and the ag materials are light and fluffy. The added transportation costs of moving a ton of ‘light and fluffy’ changes the value, but not the $/MMBTU. To supplement the information contained in the $/MMBTU metric, I am posting the Higher Heating Values (HHV) and the material densities. I will fill in the missing densities as I can.

Coal is the most dense, with the ag residues being the least dense.

PROSPECTS FOR THE BIODIESEL INDUSTRY

Where we've been.

The biodiesel industry has reached a crisis point. The demand for biodiesel has promoted the construction of a large number of biodiesel plants. These refineries use the oils from many plants, but especially soy. The cost of seed oil has risen dramatically because of the rise in petrodiesel costs to farm and the demand for ethanol as an additive to gasoline. Ethanol is used in the processing of biodiesel.

In Europe, many of the biodiesel plants have been moth-balled because of the high cost of oil seed oil. Imperim Renewables, Gray's Harbor WA, is finishing a 100,000 million gallon per year plant, with no assured source of vegetable oil. They are reluctant to import palm oil because of the adverse ecological impact of the palm plantations. Other refineries are facing the same supply issues.

The favored source of oil, algal oil, has been touted as the liquid fuel source of the future – and indeed it is. Most early investors put their money up to fund the construction of algae farms. Guess what? They proved they could grow algae using a wide variety of technologies.

Where we're at.

Slowly, it dawned on these producers and their investors, that while they could successfully grow algae, they had only very inefficient means of extracting the oil from the algae cells. The universities were of no help since most of their funding was to discover ways of growing algae and tweaking the DNA. None have developed any new technologies to extract the oil in a continuous, large volume process.

There are ways of fracturing the algae cell to get at the lipids floating around in the cytoplasm. Heat, pressure drop, impingement, solvents, crushing, grinding with small ceramic bebees – all have been tried. Yet much of the technology, derived from the lab bench was not scalable to commercial standards, except at great cost and poor results.

AlgalOilDiesel to the rescue.

We have found the technological “sweet spot” for harvesting Chlorella vulgaris cells and extracting the algal oil. The process of harvesting the mature “parent” cells and returning the “daughter” cells to the head of the growing system has been solved. The opening of the Chlorella cell is done by electro-magnetic rupture. The cytoplasm and the cell walls are separated and then the lipids (oil) removed, returning the balance of the cytoplasm to the algae production system to add to the nutrient. The cell walls can be dehydrated and sold as a health food supplement or fermented into ethanol. The wash water used to clean the raw biodiesel is laced with Potassium and serves as a nutrient.

The remaining mechanical issues are: how big do we make the system to handle what quantity of algae? If our clients will tell the quantity, we can build the machinery to handle the clients' request. We are not dealing in rocket science. We are not interested in doing study after study like the universities and think tanks. We want to build the machine the client wants and get it into operation fast. We will stand behind our work and tweak the equipment when necessary. We are constantly on the look-out for new ideas. The technology in this field is a moving target, and we move with it.

In terms of scale, our designs will serve two primary markets: The small farmer cooperative of fifteen to fifty members, using at least 100,000 gallons of biodiesel a year, and the larger farm which is producing algae which converts to 10 million gallons of biodiesel a year. While the equipment we build (the cell harvester and the cell rupture machine) are fully scalable, some of the equipment we buy from others has not been scalable, except by installing a bank of units. These units include filters, separators, polishers, and solvent recovery devices. We are working with many of these vendors and encouraging them to scale up their equipment. We have encountered the age old problem of “why invent, develop and make a much larger machine, since no one has demanded such machine”. Before Xerox was invented, no one demand a Xerox copier.

We have the science and engineering talent in our firm and the advanced knowledge of where technology should be driven to solve the “Xerox” conundrum. We will not likely be on the front page of the WSJ any time soon. We are not interested in selling out to an oil company, merely to see our patents and technology suppressed. We know that Chlorella divides 2.5 times per hour. The growth/harvest cycle is about ten days as against annually for oil seed crops. We can grow the algae in cover ponds in the middle of winter in Montana on non-crop soils. We can grow it on dry desert lands. We can make our own distilled water. The wash water can be used to grow algae and other crops. The co-product, glycerol, has many profitable uses, despite what you may have read about the glut of raw glycerine on the market. We want to use the “free” energy of geothermal wells, the Sun and wind energy. We want to be as green as we can get with the smallest carbon footprint.

5. Second vacuum pump and tank (Tank B). When Tank A is near full, sensor signals outlet value of Tank A to open. The higher vacuum in Tank B sucks the contents of Tank A into Tank B. When Tank A is empty, the sensor closes the Tank A outlet valve. A magnetic float valve (sensor) can be adjusted to allow for 20% volume of water in the tank and can actuate the pumps.

6. When this sensor closes the outlet valve of Tank A, it then (2 second delay) opens the outlet of Tank B and switches an air value from the vacuum pump to a pressure pump. The air pressure through the inlet valve to Tank B forces the contents toward # 9. Add check valve to Tank B to prevent backflow to Tank A.

7. Air pressure pump and pressure tank mentioned in # 6 with solenoid valve.

8. 8A is preceded by a check valve and is an inline heater which increases the temperature to about 90 degrees F. Automatic temperature control over range, 80 to 90 degrees F. 8B is a peristaltic pump which adds water into the line so that it has about 20% water.

9. A vibrating membrane separator has input and output valves by which it in-takes material, processes it, then purges the chamber through the outlet valve on a timed cycle. Constant pressure from #7 keeps the material at the input valve from Tank B, which acts as a buffer for the volume of algae and water need to keep # 9 busy. This separator has a sensor and switch to turn it off if no input product is available and turns it on when product is available. This separator divides the smaller, daughter cells from the mature, parent cells. The output from the distal side of the membrane is routed to a Port 9A, then, along with the water, is pumped back to the head of the pond. 10. Transfer pump downstream of Port 9A is switched on when port 9A opens and is switched off when port 9A closes.

11. Transfer pump (hydraulic gear pump) for Port 9B turns on when the valve for Port 9B opens and closes when the valve for Port 9B closes. The mature cells will be very viscous and not easily pumpable; hence the positive displacement hydraulic gear pump is specified. When Port 9B opens and discharges the mature cells, water is injected downstream into the pipe which is connected to a holding tank, Tank C.

12. The Water injector, which is a peristaltic pump, meters the injection of water into the pipeline where a vortex mixer, mixes the algal mass with the water..

14. Transfer Pump. The mature cells in Bank C, along with the water, is transferred by pump to the High Shear Processing unit. A transfer pump is turned on when a

16. separator (VMS). At this step, the VMS opens and closes its valves on a timed cycle, separating the broken cells from the cytoplasm, water and oil. The broken cell walls are purged to Port 16A and transferred to the alcohol unit. 17. Tank E. This tank is a buffer for the zeolite unit which can run continuously. When the valve to Port 16B closes, an air value opens and 100 psi is creates pressure which pushes the mixture to and through the zeolite filter. We will need two filters so that we do not need to interrupt this cycle. This is a serge tank equipped with a value which serves to reduce the pressure to about 100 psi.

19. Zeolite filters. Two cannisters are plumbed in parallel with three way, manual diverter valves so that either cannister can be the operative one. As determined by experiment, we need to figure the rate of flow (volume) of material through to zeolite cannisters to determine when the contents should be changed. This depends on the volume of the cannisters and how well the zeolite absorbs the water. The water injector in #12 should be adjustable so that the minimum amount of water needed to create the slurry, does not unnecessarily overload the zeolite filters.

20. Drying oven. We need a drying oven to purge the water from the zeolite spheres. Manual operation.

21. Outlet valves below each zeolite cannister can be manual and allow for the rectified oil be to transferred to a holding tank.

22. A final filter may be needed to remove any particulate matter which was not filtered out by #16, the second VMS. It is likely that the zeolite will perform this task. If so, we will need some way of cleaning the zeolite of any particulate matter before it is heated. We would not want to bake stuff onto the surface of the zeolite beads as that would essentially kill the beads. Perhaps a non-aqueous solvent would work. On the other hand, when the zeolite is removed from the cannisters, they already have absorbed a maximum amount of water. Why not simply use a mild detergent and wash them, then rinse, then spin dry? We could use a standard cloths washer and dump the zeolite into a fine mesh nylon bag or bags. The zeolite usually comes in 1/8th inch spheres so the mesh would only need to be 1/16th inch. It ought to work.

Bois Forte Band to Receive $300,000 in State Funds for Renewable Energy Project

The Bois Forte Band of Chippewa will receive $300,000 in state funds for a feasibility study of a renewable energy demonstration facility on its reservation. The funds are part of the $170 million Agriculture and Veterans Omnibus Bill signed Friday by Governor Tim Pawlenty.

"This project could improve energy self-sufficiency throughout northeastern Minnesota by converting locally available resources -- such as logging residue, forest trimmings, and sawmill waste -- into biofuels like ethanol and bio-butanol," said Band Chairman Kevin Leecy. "That would lessen our dependence on foreign petroleum, and it would also help the environment by reducing harmful carbon emissions." Leecy said other key benefits of the project could include the creation of new jobs and the strengthening of the Band's and the region's economies.

In addition to determining the feasibility and appropriateness of a demonstration facility, the study will identify environmental permitting requirements and the optimal size, configuration and location of a facility. Funds for the project are slated to come from a variety of sources. Besides the $300,000 Next Generation Energy Grant funded in the omnibus bill, the Band has also received a $25,000 grant from the Iron Ranges Resources agency, and it has applied for a federal Department of Energy grant.

"We believe this project will strengthen partnerships among the Band, the state, the federal government, and local counties and towns -- partnerships that are often a catalyst for economic growth," said Andrew Datko, CEO of the Bois Forte Development Corporation. "We appreciate the efforts by our community's state legislators to help us secure the funds needed to determine how the entire Arrowhead Region can benefit from a renewable energy initiative."

DOE to Offer $256 Million for Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing and IT

DOE announced on Monday that it plans to offer $256 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support energy efficiency improvements in manufacturing and information technology (IT) industries. The funds include $156 million for deployment and demonstration projects for that can help manufacturers operate more efficiently, including new energy-efficient industrial equipment, waste energy recovery systems, combined heat and power systems, and district energy systems. Waste energy recovery systems could reduce U.S. energy demand by 17,000 megawatts, while combined heat and power systems and district energy systems can operate at efficiencies of 80% or more. Conventional heat and power production facilities operate at efficiencies of only 45%, which means that 55% of the energy used by the facilities is lost through cooling towers and smokestacks, and only 45% is converted into a useful energy source.

The funds also include $50 million to support research, development, and demonstration projects for advanced industrial materials, including nanomaterials and nanomanufacturing, both of which rely on the properties of materials at the scale of a billionth of a meter, or nanometer. Another $50 million will help reduce energy use for microprocessors and servers that support the information and communication technology industries. The funds will go toward research, development, and demonstration projects that improve the energy efficiency of these services, including projects that address the power and cooling systems that help keep such services running. SUMMARY - SOLAR FURNACE CHP SYSTEM

Over the next 5 billions years before the Sun begins to dim, it will produce unfathomable amounts of

solar energy. A tiny fraction of that solar energy will reach the surface of the Earth. Yet, this tiny

fraction is enough to supply all of the energy needs, properly harnessed and distributed, to sustain our

growing global population in a pollution-free environment. How is this possible? (read on) and is it

probable? (Yes) Consider that the solar energy is responsible for plant growth, wind, waves, hydroelectric power, river power and direct conversion to electricity and for direct heat.

A Solar Furnace CHP System consists of four major elements: A solar energy collector on a Sun

tracker electro-mechanical system, a Thermal Energy Battery, and an application, such as a Combined

Heat and Power unit which can produce rotational horsepower. There are many other applications for

industrial and human use of the latent heat stored in the Thermal Energy Storage Unit. Here's the

problems the Solar Furnace CHP System has solved (on paper):

 Matching load to supply. The storage of a hot liquid in the TEB, greatly in excess of the

anticipated load over time, will allow for uninterrupted use by the applications. Critical backup

should always be provided such as for hospitals, communication centers and other essential

services. The TEB can provide most of that backup, since heat can be generated and parsed into

the TEB from a variety of sources (electric heat, liquid fueled heaters, geothermal heat, heat

from biomass combustion). The supply of heat from the TEB allows for matching to a variable

load.

 “Free” energy. The use of solar radiance to heat the transfer liquid is the lowest cost source of

energy, even considering the amortization of equipment and operational expenses.

 Low cost. The low cost of the Solar Furnace CHP System relative to large central plants,

makes the unit affordable by a much larger customer base.

 Distributed energy. The primary benefit is derived from the ability to size a system for a wide

variety of different applications, loads, and locations. The Solar Furnace CHP System's

electrical generation can operate in stand-alone mode or networked locally or nationally. A

significant savings of energy lost over the transmission lines, due to heat radiation, can be

realized by locating many smaller plants at the point of application and the avoidance of huge,

centralized facilities.

 Heat collection, storage and transfer. The use of a heat transfer liquid allows for two levels

of heat. The collectors will be able, on a sunny day, to heat the liquid up to 600 degrees F. This

liquid will be pumped to the TEB which is a large tank, heavily insulated and containing a heat

exchanger. The tank takes its input from the solar collectors at the maximum temperature (not

to exceed 600 degrees F), which incoming liquid heats the liquid in the TEB.

These units will be marketed to farms, greenhouse operations, dairies, food processing and packaging

plants, industrial plants and institutions which can accommodate the Sun Collectors and tracker

system. The anticipated payback time will be between two and ten years, depending on the

applications employed.
